Is surveillance such a bad thing?

Most of us can agree that the way people live in the book "1984," is pretty strange and unappealing, but maybe there is a way that the government can surveillance us without it being the way it was in "1984."  The Government probably won't set up telescreens everywhere, order us around, make us do "Physical jerks", or make the English language shorter and start adding words into our vocabulary like "doubleplusgood."  I don't think that the Government watching us is some sort of way to figure how to take away our independence and take control of us.  I just think it's a way for the Government to try and protect us and this country.  Also I think that the pros outweigh the cons in this situation.  Sure the government knows what you are doing, but they're not doing it because they're creepy stalkers, they're doing it to make sure that you're not doing anything threatening to this country.  Having the government surveillance us can also be helpful in many crimes committed, especially in some cases where it would have helped a lot if the police only knew how exactly the crime was committed or who did it.
