During the whole month of February we have been talking about how people are mistreated based on their gender, sexuality, race, or by how they act. I think it's completely unfair to judge someone so harshly based on things they can't control. The two topics that I was able to relate to was being discriminated against based on my race and being a female. However, I believe that one day people won't be discriminated against so much based on their gender as they will be based on their race. Some people believe that we're living or about to be living in a "post-racial" society, but I don't think that's necessarily true. From growing up in the South I have had many experiences with racism, from being denied to swim in a pool because they didn't serve "our kind" (I didn't even know that could still be a thing in the early 2000s), to having to avoid certain cities on certain days to avoid getting stuck in the middle of a KKK rally. The most racism I've experienced while living in California is from my neighbors by comments that they've made behind my back and not directly to my face. I live in a mostly white neighborhood (By mostly I mean all. We are the only people of color in my neighborhood...I've checked). A few years ago I noticed that whenever anyone in my family goes outside my neighbors would immediately go inside. At first I thought that it was just a weird coincidence because the first day we meet them they were very friendly, but then I realized that they would literally drop everything they were doing and run in the house (By run I mean running like they were the star of their school track team and also I don't know why they were running in the first place, like seriously, my family would not find joy in attacking them or kidnapping one of their children). My family and I just laughed it off because we thought they were just weird, but one Halloween night we heard our neighbors whispering to people telling them not to go to our house because we were black (they missed out too because we had the GOOD candy). Anyway, the point of my story is that racism may be more upfront and more noticeable in some areas than in others, but that doesn't mean that areas that are more quiet about their racism don't exist and aren't just as racist. One day we may end up living in a world that seems to look like everyone is very accepting of everyone, but there will always be ignorant people in the world who believe that one race is inferior to another.
