Self-Image

What is it really in society and what affects someone's self-image? Self-image is the idea or the conception you have on yourself. The articles we read and the videos we watch in class are examples of traits that affect and shape ones self-image, whether it's race, religion, culture, language, or gender. The way someone walks and talks, for example, can be a form of expressing themselves. That may simply be part of someones characteristics but it doesn't define who they really are. It is very disrespectful if someone makes fun of others just because they find the way they talk or the way they walk "differently" then they expected. Either way they have to learn to accept criticism and insults being thrown at them because there is always going to be that one person who is going to judge no matter how you change. The way someone walks or talks, whether female or male, in my opinion does not matter to me. What I look for in a person is their persona not their looks. More importantly, your self-image should be realistic, whether positive or negative and you shouldn't care about what others think it say.

  1. Sometimes people judge people without even knowing it. Like its natural to make a comment on someone's image and think its funny and continue teasing without thinking they are hurting the person. Sometimes it gets worse then that where a person would get bullied because there persona and traits aren't like other people. Perception is everything and you create your image before anyone else try's to. Just be you and stand up for yourself

  2. We have gotten in such a terrible habit that when we make fun or insult another person we attack their race or gender. We attack and point out characteristics that can never be changed. I believe we do this because it is easy so see someone is a girl and can claim they are weak, or point of that someone is Asian so they must be smart. I don't agree with harming anyone's self-image but when we criticize others self-image it is never of a characteristic that can be controlled. We always are picking on the obvious uncontrollables.

  3. The way self image has become such a prominent part of our society is honestly disturbing. Society has made looking the part one of the most important things on a person's mind. Girls should be skinny; not a twig, but no fat either. If men want a beard, it shouldn't look homeless, but it shouldn't look like a pubescent preteen either. There is no in between. And because of this, people, especially women, have a horrible self-image of themselves.

  4. You're absolutely right and I completely agree. Unfortunately our society has grown into these bad habits and it has become so normal on a daily basis that we judge people unconsciously. The truth is, it's no one's fault but ours. We see it every day yet no one has the courage to stand up and say something. Our opinions don't mean anything if they aren't voiced. We will never understand why people judge others based and the way they walk or talk, but we can discourage it.
