"Phylosophe"

In the video we watched in class a couple weeks ago, Judith Butler told a story about a young boy. He walked with a slight sway in his hips that became more prominent. Other boys noticed he was different and ended up throwing him over a bridge which killed him. This isn't a rare thing in our society. Many people are discriminated, teased, emotionally and physically hurt for being "different." What was difficult to comprehend about this story was the fact that these boys believed they could not only taunt this boy, but kill him.
The way he walked did not involve them in any way yet they acted as if he was going to rub his swaying walk onto them.  This goes into the idea of homophobia. Many people fear others who do not socially or religiously agree with their sexual views. They believe it is wrong and some even think it is like a disease that can be contracted. In my opinion, what another person does with their life does not concern others and a person should have the freedom to be who they want to be. It's saddening knowing that people in this world can take their hate to such a horrible level by taking someone's life.

  1. I agree with you that people should be free to be who they want to be. When I first heard this video, it made me really upset to hear how mean people can truly be. The guy was killed for just the way he walked and wasn’t considered “manly”. If a guy is seen as delicate and uses makeup, people already start to judge him. I believe it shouldn’t get to the point of hurting an individual just for being different. People have to be more open-minded and remove generalizations.
