Financial Aid

So after today's lecture by Pat Dean, I was very curious about his college life and the financial aid that he used. When he mentioned FastWeb, I decided to do some research about all of the scholarship programs offered to us seniors. When looking through the internet, I found so many different options and useful information. Fastweb helped a lot so I recommend everyone to look there at least once. Many of the scholarship programs require some type of acceptance; for example, many academic scholarships will ask for a normal essay or paper explaining your academic life. So be prepared for that seniors!

Also, I've been thinking about taking a trip to the career center to check out other programs. I heard that many scholarships are offered for random reasons. I find it kind of weird that there are so many different reasons to offer scholarships but I think that they benefit us all. I suggest we all look for a scholarship at one point when applying to college because I'm sure there is one out there for each and every one of us.

  1. I like FastWeb, but sometimes I feel like I'm shopping at Marshall's. If I dig and dig and dig and dig, I will eventually find something I like, that fits me, and that has the right price tag on it. But dang, I am going to have to look at about 10,000 items to find that one thing. I have invested lots of time and energy to find it.

About finding and applying for scholarships: you have to think about this work like a part time job. Commit X number of hours to this work every week. Document your time. If you spend 8 hours a week for the next ten weeks, that's a regular pay period (80 hours, or two full-time work weeks). If you earn a $2000 scholarship after all of that work, you can rightly say that you've earned $25/hour, which you have to admit is pretty good money for a 17-18 year old without a high school diploma.

It's a slog. But it pays off if you do it, and do it in a systematic manner. Keep records.

  2. I thought Pat Dean's lecture was very informative and was really great to see alumni give us advice about the road ahead. Applying for scholarships is very time consuming, I like fast web but somehow, as Ms. Fletcher says above me, I can always find myself searching hundreds of scholarships before I find one particularly for me. I know that I need to do this and in the long run it will pay off. Another good site zinch.com they inform me of important college registration deadlines and scholarships that are available.
